Description

Introduction to the role & team At Bumble, we’re building a world where all relationships are healthy and equitable - and that work depends on technology that people can trust. The Trust & Safety Engineering team plays a vital role in protecting our members, our communities, and our platform at global scale, designing systems that help kindness thrive while preventing harm. As Director of Engineering for Trust & Safety, you’ll lead multiple squads of engineers working on high-impact, sensitive systems that sit at the heart of Bumble’s mission. You’ll shape how we scale resilient, responsible, and future-ready platforms, while role-modelling our Bumble values of Courage, Respect, and Excellence in how you lead. AI is central to how this team operates: not as a bolt-on, but as a core capability embedded into engineering strategy, delivery, and decision-making.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Lead and grow multiple engineering squads, supporting ICs and managers across many seniority levels to deliver systems that are reliable, scalable, and aligned to Bumble’s commitment to healthy, equitable connections Contribute to a clear technical and organisational vision for Trust & Safety engineering, translating company strategy into executable roadmaps and outcomes with measurable impact Embed AI thoughtfully into engineering practices, from leveraging machine-learning-powered tooling to improving detection, automation, and operational decision-making at scale Partner closely with Product, Data, Design, Legal, and Operations leaders, collaborating with purpose to balance member experience, platform integrity, and business needs Create inclusive, high-performing team environments where engineers feel empowered to take ownership, learn continuously, and see work through from insight to impact Guide architectural decisions across distributed systems, APIs, and data pipelines, ensuring solutions are robust, privacy-aware, and built for long-term sustainability Champion engineering excellence by improving delivery practices, reliability metrics, and incident response for complex, always-on systems Role model Bumble values of Courage and Curiosity by encouraging responsible experimentation, learning from outcomes, and adapting with an agile mindset as the platform evolves

ABOUT YOU

You are a people-first engineering leader who finds energy in building, scaling, and supporting managers and teams working on complex, mission-critical systems You bring strong experience leading multiple squads or groups within an engineering organisation, with accountability for delivery, technical direction, and team health You are fluent in modern engineering systems and practices (including distributed architectures, service reliability, and secure data handling) and can translate technical nuance for diverse audiences You actively embed AI into how teams work, setting expectations for responsible use, evaluating opportunities for automation and insight, and guiding teams through adoption with confidence You work cross-functionally with ease, take ownership of outcomes, and adapt plans quickly while keeping long-term goals in focus You role model Bumble values of Respect and Excellence through inclusive leadership, thoughtful decision-making, and a commitment to building technology that serves people well Typically requires 10–15 years of experience, though we welcome candidates with alternative backgrounds that demonstrate equivalent skills You’re curious by nature, open to new approaches, reflective about impact, and motivated by work that reaches beyond your team to influence the wider organisation
