About the role

Backend engineering at Envoy powers the systems that make workplace experiences seamless, secure, and reliable at scale. Every API you design, every schema you model, and every system you optimize directly supports millions of workplace interactions across tens of thousands of locations worldwide. As a Fullstack Engineer in this role, you'll own meaningful product areas end-to-end — from shaping technical design to delivering scalable, production-ready systems. You'll partner closely with Product, Design, and Frontend Engineering to translate complex requirements into resilient backend architectures. You'll still work across the stack, but your primary ownership will live on the backend. This role requires strong technical judgment, product thinking, and a high-quality bar. The systems you build must be reliable, performant, and maintainable under real-world constraints. This role sits on our Emergency Notifications team, a safety-critical product that sends real-time alerts to employees and visitors across tens of thousands of workplaces worldwide via SMS, email, Slack, Teams, and push. The systems you build have to work when it matters most. Role Lean: Backend (70/30) This role requires deeper backend expertise. System design, API architecture, and data modeling are the primary focus. Frontend fluency is expected but not the center of gravity. This is an on-site position that requires 4 days a week (Monday through Thursday) in our San Francisco HQ office. You will Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using TypeScript, Java/Kotlin, and Ruby on Rails Architect and evolve APIs consumed by web and mobile clients Design and optimize relational data models (Postgres) and improve system performance and observability Own features end-to-end, from technical design through deployment and iteration Build and contribute to frontend experiences using React where needed, partnering closely with frontend engineers Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and maintain high engineering velocity Participate in system design and code reviews to elevate engineering standards Proactively identify and address technical debt You have A BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field 6+ years of experience building production software, with significant backend depth Strong experience building and consuming APIs (RESTful and/or GraphQL) Production experience with TypeScript, Java/Kotlin, and/or Ruby on Rails Experience designing relational schemas and working with Postgres Strong understanding of data modeling and query optimization Working proficiency in frontend technologies, including React and JavaScript/TypeScript Familiarity with Git/GitHub and CI/CD workflows A product mindset — you care about building systems that create real user impact Comfort working in ambiguous problem spaces and taking ownership to drive outcomes Your values You are product-minded and user-focused, with a strong sense of quality and craftsmanship across the full stack You take ownership for outcomes, driving work forward end-to-end and following through on impact, not just implementation You hold a high bar for everything you build — how it looks, how it performs, and how it scales You communicate clearly and value collaboration and constructive feedback You balance technical excellence with delivery, adapting as priorities evolve You are curious and motivated to continuously learn and improve You thrive in a team environment and take pride in shared success You'll get The opportunity to work across the full stack on meaningful product areas, including customer-facing surfaces, platform systems, and internal tools A collaborative, cross-functional environment with a strong Product and Design partnership Ownership and autonomy over impactful work spanning frontend and backend A thoughtful team-matching process designed to align your strengths and interests with the right product team Competitive compensation, benefits, and growth opportunities By applying for this position, you acknowledge that you have fully read and understand the job requirements and received the Envoy Privacy Notice for applicants, which is linked here .
