About Formlabs

Do you want to change how the world creates? At Formlabs, we’re building the tools that make it possible for anyone to bring their ideas to life, from cutting-edge products to life-saving medical devices. Our 3D printing technology powers innovation at more than 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. Together, we’re helping everyone design, prototype, and manufacture faster than ever before. We’re a team of hands-on builders, engineers, and innovators reinventing how the world makes physical things. If you’re ready to shape the future of fabrication, come build it with us.

Your Impact

Formlabs is seeking a hands-on Manufacturing Automation Engineer to own the technical performance and process flow of our Billerica production site. This role is the bridge between high-level process design and hands-on equipment installation and maintenance. You will be responsible for keeping our 3D printers and supporting production equipment running at peak performance while identifying and automating away manual steps in our high-mix order flow. If you are an engineer who enjoys solving complex workflow puzzles and isn't afraid to pick up a wrench to keep a line moving, we want to talk to you.

What You’ll Do

Equipment Ownership

Act as the primary technical point of contact for all site hardware, including 3D printers and post processing equipment, and other floor hardware. Manage vendor relationships, perform troubleshooting, and ensure maximum uptime.

Process Optimization

Analyze the "high-mix" order flow to identify bottlenecks. Simplify packaging strategies and eliminate redundant manual steps to increase site throughput.

Automation & Tooling

Design and implement hardware or software improvements to automate manual production tasks, reducing labor costs and human error.

Operational Logic

Improve the physical and digital flow of materials through the factory to ensure orders move from "print" to "ship" with minimal friction.

Continuous Improvement

Use data-backed insights to refine production steps, ensuring the Billerica site scales efficiently as order volume grows.

About You

Degree

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering.

Experience

2+ years in a production environment, ideally involving additive manufacturing or high-tech hardware.

Technical Grit

Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair complex electro-mechanical equipment (you are comfortable "wrenching" on machines).

Systems Thinking

Experience optimizing workflows or layouts for high-mix, low-volume production environments.

Bonus Skills

Experience with 3D printing and associated post-processing workflows Familiarity with Lean manufacturing tools (5S, Value Stream Mapping). Experience managing equipment vendors and service contracts
